How to Plan Your Gear Aesthetics with the Minecraft Armor Trim Calculator
Introduced in the Trails & Tales (1.20) update and expanded in 1.21 Tricky Trials, Smithing Templates allow survival players to customize their armor with 180 unique pattern-and-color combinations per armor piece. Because finding rare templates like Silence or Flow takes hours of dungeon raiding—and duplicating a template costs 7 Diamonds per craft—using our Minecraft Armor Trim Calculator before touching a Smithing Table prevents costly mistakes.
- Select Your Armor Tier: Dark Netherite Armor pairs best with high-luminance materials like Diamond, Gold, Quartz, Emerald, and Amethyst, whereas bright Diamond Armor looks sharpest when contrasted against dark Netherite, Redstone, or Lapis Lazuli trims.
- Compare All 18 Smithing Patterns: Switch between high-coverage templates (such as Silence, Flow, and Spire, which cover over 45% of the armor surface) and minimalist accent templates (such as Coast, Sentry, and Rib).
- Always Keep One Backup Template: Applying a template on a Smithing Table consumes it permanently! As shown in the smithing duplication cost box, trimming a full 4-piece set while keeping 1 master template in your Ender Chest requires duplicating the template 4 times (4 × 7 = 28 Diamonds + 4 matching structure blocks).
Want your chat nickname or base walls to match your trimmed Netherite set? Use our Minecraft Gradient Generator or Minecraft Text Gradient Generator to create matching Amethyst or Emerald rank tags, build matching walls in the Minecraft Block Gradient Generator, or inspect Bedrock material codes in the Minecraft Color Codes Generator.

All 10 Trim Ore Materials & Color Hex Values
Any of the 10 valid metals and crystals below can be placed into the right-hand slot of a Smithing Table inside the Minecraft Armor Trim Calculator workflow:
- High-Brightness Contrast Materials (Best on Netherite): Diamond (
#6EEDD8Cyan), Gold Ingot (#DEB12DRoyal Gold), Emerald (#11A036Vibrant Green), Amethyst Shard (#9A5CC6Neon Purple), Nether Quartz (#E3D4C4Warm Ivory), and Iron Ingot (#ECECECChrome Silver). - Dark & Warm Metallic Materials (Best on Diamond/Iron/Gold): Netherite Ingot (
#625859Charcoal Matte), Redstone Dust (#971607Crimson), Lapis Lazuli (#21497BDeep Cobalt), and Copper Ingot (#B4684DBronze). Note: if you trim Golden Armor with a Gold Ingot (or Diamond Armor with a Diamond), the game automatically shifts the trim palette one shade darker so the pattern remains visible!
Frequently Asked Questions About the Minecraft Armor Trim Calculator
Yes! Placing an already-trimmed piece of enchanted Netherite armor back into a Smithing Table with a new template and material completely overwrites the old trim while preserving 100% of your enchantments, durability, and anvil prior work count. However, the old template and material are not refunded, which is why testing combinations in our Minecraft Armor Trim Calculator first saves so many Diamonds.
No. Even if you apply a Gold Ingot trim to your Netherite Helmet using a template from the smithing preview tool, Piglins only check the base armor item ID. You must wear at least one piece of actual Golden Armor (such as Golden Boots or a Golden Helmet) to pacify Piglins.
In update 1.20.5, Mojang replaced legacy curly-brace NBT tags ({Trim:{...}}) with square-bracket Item Components ([minecraft:trim={pattern:"...",material:"..."}]). Our smithing template calculator automatically outputs the modern 1.21 component syntax ready for command blocks.
In vanilla 1.21, Smithing Templates can only be applied to wearable player Helmets (including Turtle Shells), Chestplates, Leggings, and Boots. Elytra customization uses Banners or Capes, and Wolf Armor is dyed using regular leather dyes rather than Smithing Templates.
Because the Smithing Table never increases an item's hidden anvil RepairCost tag, you can apply armor trims before or after enchanting with zero XP penalty! To calculate the cheapest possible anvil order for your 7-enchantment God Boots and Helmet, use our partner Minecraft Enchantment & Anvil Calculator right after picking your design in the armor customization visualizer.
